The leisure industry is an essential part of the Austrian economy. Around 20,000 commercial accommodation companies booked almost 135 million overnight stays in 2015 with just under 1.1 million guest beds. Direct value added in 2015 amounted to around € 18.5 billion, or 5.4% of GDP.

On a European-level (EU-28) about 31 million guest beds were accounted in 2015 with about 2.8 billion overnight stays at commercial providers.
